While not located in the Grand Canyon National Park, it is located in a smaller part of the same canyon system, offering a view like no other can.

Owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe, the Skywalk will be the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim. March 28, 2007 as the official public opening date of The Skywalk.

Access to The Skywalk will run from dawn to dusk and will cost $25 per person in addition to the cost of a Grand Canyon Hualapai West entrance package. One hundred and twenty people will be allowed on the bridge at a time. Admittance is first come, first serve for walk up visitors; however, reservations can be made. Guests will enter and exit the walkway via temporary buildings while the adjacent visitor’s center is being completed. The Hualapai Tribe plans to issue numbered shoe covers, in order to avoid scratches and slipping, to each visitor that enters the open-air walkway.

Prior to the public opening in March, Grand Canyon Hualapai West will host a “First Walk” event for media and VIPs. The name of the first public figure to step on The Skywalk will be announced closer to the opening.

The historical rollout of The Skywalk structure, with the glass in place, is scheduled for February 27 to March 2. The initial part of the rollout process involves jacking the structure up off of the supports and then subjecting the structure to several days of thorough tests that replicate the conditions of final placement. After the final testing is complete, the multi-million pound steel enforced structure will be rolled out across the canyon’s edge, which takes multiple days. Immediately after the structure is in position, it will be seated and attached to the foundation. Details for a media event during the rollout will be revealed closer to the event.

Located at Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point, The Skywalk facility will also include a 6,000 square-foot visitor’s center on three levels – underground, first story and second story – which will contain a museum, movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shop, and several restaurants and bars, including a high-end restaurant called The Skywalk Café that will offer outdoor patio and rooftop seating on the edge of the canyon. The second story will be where visitors can access The Skywalk glass walkway. The visitor’s center will also offer private indoor and outdoor facilities for meetings, special events and weddings.

Grand Canyon West is located approximately 120 miles east of Las Vegas, Nev., and 72 miles northwest of Kingman, Ariz. Attractions available at Grand Canyon West include The Indian Village with authentic dwellings, The Hualapai Market, and The Hualapai Ranch, a western town with horseback and wagon rides. Grand Canyon West is the only location throughout the entire Grand Canyon where visitors can access the river and water recreation activities at the bottom of the canyon via helicopter tours. Think hybrids are just for smug eco-conscious commuters creeping through rush-hour traffic? Think again. Paul Moller, the guy who brought us the much-hyped but never-built SkyCar, is hopping on the green bandwagon with a sexed-up gas-electric aero-car based on the Ferrari 599 GTB.

Moller's flying Ferrari, if it comes to fruition, could carry you 75 miles in the air and 150 miles on the ground, with 40 miles of that coming from the batteries. Moller says the Autovolantor will work just like a plug-in hybrid until you get sick of sitting in traffic, at which point you can take off vertically and fly at speeds reaching 150 mph -- 55 mph slower than an unmolested 599 is capable -- for as long as 15 minutes. So what's the inspiration for the Autovolantor? Was it the culmination of a lifelong dream to combine a super-exotic sports car with the thrill of flight? Not quite.

We had a Russian billionaire come to us complaining that he was sick of sitting in Moscow traffic," Paul Moller told us. "He gave us money and told us to build a car that flies." That part makes sense -- sort of -- but doesn't explain why Moller chose a $300,000 Italian exotic instead of, say, a Ford Focus. Moller says it all came down to what's practical. "We must have tested 100 different cars," he explains. "But the Ferrari's long hood was really the best choice when it came time to make room for the fans."

The Autovolnator uses eight fans just like the ones that power the SkyCar Moller's been working on forever. That craft, billed as a vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (VTOL) and once offered for sale by Neiman-Marcus for $3.5 million, could hover up to 10 feet off the ground using ducted fans to provide lift and propulsion. "Really, we're just taking the SkyCar and morphing it into a different shape," Moller says of the Autovolantor. "That's why we were able to get the design done in about five months."

Moller says he's performed wind tunnel and stability analysis tests on a model (which looks to us like a Revell model kit with wings tacked on) and the results "predict good all-around performance," according to the Sacramento Business Journal. But that's as far as the project's gone. The Russian businessman closed his wallet when he learned a prototype would cost about $5 million. PC manufacturers seem convinced that you do — at least, that would explain the sudden crop of stylish, lightweight home desktops with touchscreens. Dell is the latest PC maker to introduce computer in this category, with a new product called Studio One 19 that targets home users who want a relatively lightweight machine for tasks such web surfing, basic multimedia and notes.

"You can watch HD content, play with your photos, surf the internet or do your taxes on a machine that is full featured," says John New, a marketing executive at Dell.

Dell’s latest offering follows similar products from HP and Asus. HP has had the TouchSmart PC, which has been available for a year and a half, while Asus started offering its Eee Top touchscreen desktop earlier this year.

The Studio One 19 desktop is currently available in Japan and is expected to start retailing in the U.S. in a few weeks.

But unlike its rivals, such as Asus’ 1.6 GHZ Atom processor-based touchscreen desktop, the Studio One 19 comes with enough power to keep most people happy. The Studio One 19 PC allows users to choose between Intel’s Celeron, Dual Core Celeron, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Core processors for their machine. It also allows users to choose between Nvidia’s GeForce 9200 or 9400 graphics, up to 4GB of memory, 750 GB of hard disk drive, six USB ports, web camera and optional Blu-ray disc player.

The idea to give customers the kind of flexbility and customization that they are used to while buying a Dell machine, while offering them an innovative design, says New.

The most eye-catching thing about the Studio One 19 desktop is the use of fabric as a material in PC design. The Studio One 19 will come with fabric frames in different colors including blue, black, red and pink.

The desktop is priced at $700 for a non-touchscreen model and at $800 for a touchscreen version. That’s more expensive than the $500 Asus Eee Top but Dell is betting there’s more bang for the buck here.

Fujitsu says it has successfully demonstrated the ability to perform basic read/write capability of each individual nanohole of the patterned media using a typical flying head on a rotating disk. That breakthrough could lead the company to produce hard drives with storage capacities of up to 1.2TB on a two-platter, 2.5-in. drive as soon as 2010, noted Joel Hagberg, vice president of business development at Fujitsu Computer Products of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Fujitsu Ltd.

The construction of ideally ordered alumina nanohole patterned media was done through a collaboration between Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Yamagata Fujitsu Ltd. and Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology. The achievement is published in the July online version of Applied Physics Letters.

"[Fujitsu's achievement] allows especially the smaller form factors to reach pretty high capacities. From a business-requirement standpoint, one advantage that brings is the opportunity to use smaller drives for applications, and smaller drives tend to use less power," remarked Rydning. "That kind of technology is definitely what's needed to get [improved storage] requirements."

Samsung have announced a new addition to their Ultra range of mobile phones, with the Ultra Smart F700. The phone, which they're calling 'revolutionary' (doesn't every manufacturer?), will be showcased at next week's 3GSM World Congress, so we're sure to hear more about it, and get our mitts on it then.

The phone features a full touch screen user interface on its 2.78 inch colour display (440x240 pixel resolution), has a slide-out full QWERTY keypad, and VibeTonz technology that provides tactile feedback to the user.

They've utilised a 'drag and drop' interface allowing easier menu navigation, music play list control, and other functions. Is this sounding like the iPhone to you? Touch screens certainly seem to be the 'in thing' right now; I wonder how many more manufacturers will beat Apple to it...

Anyway, back to the Samsung. The Ultra Smart F700 features HSDPA giving a maximum data transfer speed of 7.2Mbps. This means a 4MB song could be downloaded in around 4 seconds.

The phone has a full HTML web browser, a whopping 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, Bluetooth, WAP, Java, and USB. It features microSD expansion, and measures up at 104 x 50 x 16.4mm.

No exact word on availability yet, and price will depend on who you get it with. Looks very nice though - anyone want one?

Dell started selling a computer complete with an eight-speaker surround-sound package, a Bluetooth keyboard, and a 20.1-inch monitor — an impressive host of extras for any desktop system. Thing is, the XPS 2010 is a notebook, a machine that can be closed shut and carried — monitor, speakers, detachable keyboard, and all — from one place to another.

More than ever, computer makers are blurring the lines between desktops and notebooks, making the latter an attractive alternative to a hulking PC. The increasing appeal of notebooks is showing up in analysts' forecasts: Gartner predicts an increase of only 1.9 percent in global desktop sales for this year, compared with an estimated 31.4 percent gain in notebooks.

What gives? For one, developing countries — where demand for computers is rising at a rapid clip to begin with — are adopting notebooks more quickly than desktops, says Gartner analyst Leslie Fiering. Many businesses are also using more notebooks, having replaced existing desktop systems, she says. For home users, it often boils down to ease of use. "There's the issue of just being able to close the lid and put it away, or put it in another room," Fiering says.

More features, more money

As far as power goes, these laptops are equal to, if not better than, many desktops. Recent entries from VoodooPC and Alienware, recently acquired by Dell, have even strapped in two of Nvidia's newest mobile graphics cards side-by-side for playing the latest graphics-intensive games or the most demanding of applications.

As one would expect, these luggables cost more than their desktop equivalents. Most of the desktop-replacement laptops are the flagship portables from their respective companies. VoodooPC's 19-inch, dual-video-card setup starts at a little under $5,000. Buyers will need to make room in their budget as well as on their desk for these monsters. Some power-hungry portables don't boast long battery life, either.

If consumers replace their desktop with one of these laptops, they may need a more portable computing option if they plan to do a lot of commuting. While still more convenient than transporting a desktop rig, carrying a close-to-20-pound notebook computer, even with a handle, to work or anywhere else could become tiresome if performed daily.

Limited capacity to customize

The ideal partner for a desktop-replacement system may actually be another in-between portable like Samsung's Q1, one of the so-called Ultramobile PCs. This would give owners of the heavier, pseudoportable notebooks a way to stay wired one way or another, while still being able to transport the less-portable laptop when necessary. Owning both kinds of portables would prove a costly option, however.

For now, desktops still win out over notebooks in the area of customizability. Adding 120GB hard drives or a next-gen DVD drive to a PC tower is no problem. The same can be done with a laptop, but it's not as easy.

Desktops hold a firm place in most PC enthusiasts' hearts, and their lower price means they won't be fading away anytime soon. But for those willing to make a few trade-offs and plunk down considerably more cash, the luggable laptop has legs.

Dell hasn’t touched their Vostro line in quite some time, so when it was announced today that the series would be getting a refresh, I was happy. And it looks like the company took these updates seriously as well, changing quite a bit on these laptops which are intended for the business crowd.

Though most definitely designed for business folk, these laptops have gained a slight consumer bent with the redesign. The laptops that received a refresh include the 13.3-inch Vostro 1320, the 15.4-inch Vostro 1520 and the 17-inch Vostro 1720. Toshiba has announced their new Satellite A135 laptop series with 15.4-inch widescreen. These laptops will be available in three different configurations: A135-S4499, A135-S4467 and A135-S4427. They are powered by the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors, Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset, and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB-224MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. The laptops also support IntelPRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g), four USB ports, RJ-45 LAN port, RJ-11 modem port and an i-LINK IEEE-1394.
